Week of 11/18-11/22

Here is what is happening this week in class and what we will be learning about. Homework for the week is also listed. 

Math: Homework: Lesson 38-40 (side B)/ STAR Math Thurs./ Math and Fact Test Friday
The lessons will progressively get more difficult as the year goes on. Every five lessons there will be a Math Test. 
Math concepts students are currently working on:
3rd: number patterns, word problems, money showed in two ways, ordering from least to greatest, multiple digit/multiple number addition, and adding fractions to a whole number. 
4th: multiple rule number patterns, place value/value, comparisons and symbols, measuring fractions of an inch, multiple number/multiple digit multiplication, estimating/rounding to nearest hundred, and time zones. 
Students will also be  working on a new program to go along with math and reading called Freckle Math. This will include fact, practice and adaptive tests/activities.

Language Arts: Homework: whatever is not finished in class. Spelling Test Friday
Reading: During our reading group time students continue to work on different strategies to help with comprehension of the text. This week students will finish reading their group chapter books and work together to complete a book report. 
4th-Because of Winn Dixie, 3rd groups: Nancy Drew:Lost Locket, Swiss Family Robinson
Spelling Connections: Student are working through unit 3-4
Freckle ELA will also be an option to work on during Language Arts. This will include a word study, adaptive tests and reading practice and quizzes. 
Handwriting: Cursive practice 3rd grade:20-21/4th grade:24
Writing: We are currently working on a persuasive writing on Thanksgiving and turkey. Students continue with parts of speech practice.

Science/S.S. This week students will finish up their state symbol report. Final reports will be due on Monday (Nov. 25th) to share with the class. Posters can be full size or half size (whatever best fits all of their information). Each student has a packet for note-taking and the project requirements/grading rubric.
In science we continue going over the new vocabulary for Earth systems (volcanoes/earthquakes) and start reading form various texts.

Week of 11/11-11/15

Math: Homework: Lesson 36-37 (side B) Math/Fact Test Wednesday
The first ten lessons are review from last year and will progressively get more difficult as the year goes on. Every five lessons there will be a Math Test. 
Math concepts students are currently working on:
3rd: number patterns, money showed in two ways, adding fractions
4th: fractional parts-numerator/denominator, line plots:mode & range, circles with a compass: radius and diameter, multiplication with groups, greater than and less than with multiplication, measuring fractions of an inch. 
Students will also be  working on a new program to go along with math and reading called Freckle Math. This will include fact, practice and adaptive tests/activities.

Language Arts: Homework: whatever is not finished in class. No spelling this week.
Reading: During our reading group time students continue to work on different strategies to help with comprehension of the text. Students may have reading homework from our group time. 
4th-Because of Winn Dixie, 3rd groups: Nancy Drew:Lost Locket, Swiss Family Robinson
Students are also working on a daily reading worksheet.

Handwriting: Cursive practice 3rd grade:19-20/4th grade:23
(**A reminder that 4th graders will write everything in cursive after Christmas break!)

Writing: We are working on parts of speech: this week students will finish "verbs" on Google Docs. We will be starting our next writing project, which will be a persuasive/narrative writing on turkeys! 

Science/S.S. This week students will finish their research on their state symbol and will start writing a rough draft of their report. Students will work on their rough draft in class and then type their final copy on a Google Doc. We will type at school, but students may also type at home. Students will put their poster together at home. Posters can be full size or half size (whatever best fits all of their information). 4th: fractional parts-numerator/denominator, line plots, circles with a compass: radius and diameter, multiplication with groups, greater than and less than with multiplication, measuring fractions of an inch.

Students will put their poster project together at home, but will have class time for research. Posters can be full size or half size (whatever best fits all of their information). Each student has a packet for note-taking and the project requirements/grading rubric. 

In science we will learn new vocabulary for Earth systems (volcanoes/earthquakes).

Week of 10/21-10/25

Math: Homework: Lesson 25-27(side B) Math/Fact Test Wednesday
The first ten lessons are review from last year and will progressively get more difficult as the year goes on. Every five lessons there will be a Math Test. 
Math concepts students are currently working on:
3rd: congruent shapes & equal parts, 2 digit numbers, number patterns, money, fractions
4th: fractional parts, adding 2 and 3 digit numbers with metal computation, bar graphs, money shown two ways, varied combinations, compass - radius and diameter, multiplication with groups

Language Arts: Homework: whatever is not finished in class. Spell Test Friday.
Reading: During our reading group time students will work on different strategies to help our comprehension of the text. Students may have reading homework from our group time.

Students will put their poster project together at home, but will have class time for research.
In science we will do an activity about the process skills we learned and will then begin studying Earth systems (volcanoes/earthquakes).

The first ten lessons are review from last year and will progressively get more difficult as the year goes on. Every five lessons there will be a Math Test. 
Math concepts students are currently working on:

4th: fractional parts, adding 2 and 3 digit numbers with metal computation, bar graphs, money shown two ways, varied combinations, compass - radius and diameter

Language Arts: Homework: 
Reading: We will focus on strategies and skills to use during reading. This week students will be starting chapter books in their reading groups. 
4th-Because of Winn Dixie, 3rd- will pick their books this week!
Spelling: No spelling words this week because there was no school on Monday, instead there will be a spelling packet to work on.
Spelling Connections: Student are beginning unit 2/3. 

Handwriting: Cursive practice 3rd grade:15-16/4th grade:21
(**A reminder that 4th graders will write everything in cursive after Christmas break!)

Writing: Students are working on their first draft of "How to writing". This week we will also edit and revise those in class as students finish them.

Science/S.S. We have finished our overview of Oregon symbols. This week students will be assigned a symbol to research in-depth to present and share with the class. We will also be talking about note-taking and research skills. 
In science we will do an activity about the process skills we learned and will then begin studying Earth systems (volcanoes/earthquakes).
